Sport BC Awards - 2016
50th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards
March 10, 2016, Vancouver Convention Centre East
The Athlete of the Year Awards, founded by Sport BC, is the longest standing
sport recognition event in Canada. Awards in 18 different categories are
given each year to athletes, coaches, and officials for their performance
and contribution to sport in our province.
Nominations are received from the provincial and multi-sport organizations,
high schools, colleges, or universities. Finalists and winners are selected
by a committee of 20 highly regarded BC sportswriters, broadcasters, and
amateur sport leaders.

Sport - Golf
This year we congratulate Darren Douma on being named
a Finalist for this award - and for your remarkable achievements in the
sport of Golf.
Darren is ranked #1 in BC, #2 in Canada and 15th in the World.
Michael Mizera has been a tireless volunteer for BC Blind
Sports for many years. He is a retired teacher of the visually impaired
and also worked with the provincial vision outreach centre, In these roles,
Michael worked to ensure that many BC students who are blind had opportunities
in physical activity through BC Blind Sports.
Michael continues to promote participation in physical activity and PE
by BC students who are blind and volunteers in assisting this to happen.
Michael has also turned out to be a hidden Jewel, volunteering in BC Blind
Sports' December fundraising event in the gift wrap booth at Oakridge
Shopping Centre. Michael has volunteered in the gift wrap booth for a
number of years and in 2015 spent almost every day in December there,
assisting us to raise important funds to ensure our programs are able
to continue and we can provide more services to blind children, youth,
and adults in BC.
