PROVINCIAL BLIND LAWN BOWLING TOURNAMENT
BC Blind Sports & Recreation Association held their annual championships at Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club this past week.The two day event featured bowlers from Kelowna, Nanaimo and the Vancouver area.

Each player played four games .
The provincial winner and champion was Dave Ruckman of Nanaimo who went undefeated winning all his games. His sighted helper was Dean Thompson.

Second place went to Al Hanet of Kelowna with his wife Vi Hanet as his director. Mr Hanet recently represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. He and Mr. Ruckman had a very exciting final match with Mr Ruckman winning 21 to 15.

Randy Fred of Nanaimo placed third with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. Mr. Fred was the only totally blind competitor in the competition so did extremely well. He was assisted by Donn Sherry.

In fourth place and the winner of the Harvey Hodges Memorial Trophy was Jay Gatley of Nanaimo with a record of 2 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss. Jay's director was Bill Roos.

The visually impaired bowlers expressed their thanks to their sighted helpers, to the Nanaimo club for hosting the event, to BC Blind Sports for their sponsorship and to the club members who acted as markers for each game.

2012

BC Blind Sports staged the 2012 Singles Championships for blind and visually impaired lawn bowlers in Nanaimo this week.There were 8 competitors from Langley, Ladner, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Victoria and Nanaimo competing in a round robin of 7 games.

Arlene Stapleton of Victoria claimed the Gold Medal with a record of 6 wins and 1 loss. Her director was Rosemary Waldie.
Taking the Silver Medal was Ed McMillan of Langley with 5 wins and 2 losses. Ed’s director was Donn Sherry.
Randy Fred of Nanaimo earned the Bronze Medal with 4 wins, 2 ties and 1 loss. Randy is totally blind and competed against bowlers with better sight. Tom Williams is Randy’s director.
Dave Ruckman of Nanaimo assisted by Roelie Roos was awarded the Hodges Achievement Award for his 4th place finish.

The competitors were very appreciative of the efforts made by the members of Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club for providing a fine bowling surface, delicious lunches and snacks and competent markers who act as officials for each match.

Jane Blaine, executive director of BC Blind Sports and staff member Susan Flanagan were on hand to make the presentations to the winners.

2008 Canadian Blind Sports National Lawn Bowls Championships

September 8th 2008 (Courtenay, BC) - Canadian Blind Sports 2008 National Lawn Bowls Championships were held under sunny skies at the Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club, on Vancouver Island B.C. between September 2 – 5th. Twenty-five Lawn Bowlers from Alberta, BC, and Ontario competed in both men’s and women’s divisions of all three of the official International Blind Federation (IBSA) sight classes.

Canadian Blind Sports thanks BC Blind Sports and the members of Courtenay LBC for the superb job they did in hosting this event – the greens were in fantastic shape, all of the volunteers markers were well-trained and did an excellent job, and all of the bowlers were well fed throughout the week as well.

Jane D. Blaine, Executive Director of Canadian Blind Sports announced that the 2009 Canadian Blind Sports National Lawn Bowls Championships have been awarded to Alberta.

Congratulations to all the medallists and participants, and a special thank you to all of the volunteers and directors who made the event possible.

2005 World Blind Bowls Championships, South Africa

Canada won a silver medal in Women's B1 event, in South Africa at the World Blind Bowls Championships. Canadians finished 5th in Women's B2; and 8th in Women's B3. On the Men's side, Canada finished 7th in B3 Men, and 8th in the B2 Men's event. Competing in the pairs events, Canada finished 5th in B2 and 7th in the B3 pairs. 2004 CBSA National Bowls Championships
BC Blind Sports was proud to host the Canadian Blind Sports Association (CBSA) 2004 National Lawn Bowls Championships. There were thirty-one bowlers representing five provinces, which included QC, ON, SK, AB and BC. These championships were the qualifying event for the 2005 International Blind Bowls Association Championships which will be held in South Africa, April 3-15, 2005.

Thank you to all the volunteers who dedicated their valuable time and and expertise to make this event a success. They include tournament organizers, markers and the members of the West Point Grey Lawn Bowling Club.
